Details, details, details….

I have been looking forward to this wedding all season!  I went to college with the bride, and after seeing her interact with her fiance on their engagement session, I knew she had met her perfect match.  Add to this fact, her love of art and their vintage”y” chic style, and I knew that my superwoman of a sidekick, Ali Harvey and I were in for a treat.

Aside from their undeniable love for each other, this day came down to the details.  We had so many props for shooting…a parasol, a fan, a decked out red wagon, colorful umbrellas, a gorgeous hand-made shawl, some Converse kicks…..I really only need the couple, but was so grateful (and slightly overwhelmed) for all of the various options. And then all of the fabulous details of the reception….I’m not sure where to begin!

We spent the hot, hot, hot day at UW where the couple was married at the Sylvan Theater.  Then we ventured over to the Arboretum for the reception. Everyone travelled by car with exception to the bride, groom and myself.  We traveled by foot and red wagon.  I can 100% truthfully say that I have never seen or done that before! :)

The day and decor were all coordinated by the fabulous Megan of A Kurant Event.  She really kept the party flowing.  Guests danced on this warm summer night to the musical stylings of live jazz band Hochiwichi.  Live music always adds a little extra magic to the air.  The food was provided by Gourmondo Catering and Veraci Pizza.  Both providing food that is just as pleasing to the eye as to the palate. The four, yes count them, four different delicious treats were created by The Radical Cupcake.  She commits to using local and organic ingredients, and does a fantastic job in doing so. Delicious!

What else can I say, except what a wonderful affair!  I hope you enjoy this peek at your day.

I had to include the bride's beautiful mom striking this pose for me

Hats off to Snoqualmie Fiber Arts!

It has been quite awhile since I have worked shooting product….and I must admit that I don’t really miss it. I’m not saying that I didn’t have a great time on the shoot because I did. I absolutely adore Julie, the beautiful owner of Snoqualmie Fiber Arts, and her laid back sweet spirit, which allowed us to chat/girl talk while I worked…not so typical.  I still take on corporate clients here and there (mostly small, local businesses) because I love to change up my perspective and help out other small businesses, but working with product always reminds me just how much I love working with people.

Ok, I am slightly off subject…back to Snoqualmie Fiber Arts because I have no desire to take away from adorableness and the love I have for these hand-knitted hats. So much love and care are put into each one and they make fantastic presents, as each hat comes ready to gift in its charming box with coordinating ribbon and hand stamped label. You may see all of the colors/options available at www.snoqualmiefiberarts.com, but please be patient as the point of this shoot was to update that site.

P.S. Now that we have the catalog photographed, you will be seeing these beauties popping up in the future on the heads of some adorable babies.  (or if you have an adorable baby and were looking for photographs, I might be able to offer you a hat in exchange for allowing SFA to use some of the photos on their website–contact me for details)

July 16, 2010 - 8:35 pm Jodi Kusak - Jenn, We are so excited to see Tonya and Austin's wedding pics that I came to your blog to see if there were any sneak peeks! :) I then saw these adorable hats. I think I might need to get one for baby Charlotte who we had with us at wedding. - that pink one with the chocolate ribbon is too cute! (Okay they're all too cute). Love your work! Jodi

A Walk in the Park

This couple and I met up at the Arboretum for a photo walk through the park and a little game of beat the rain as huge dark clouds moved their way in. Luckily, we won the game. Well, I guess I should say luckily for the soon-to-be-bride and me. I’m not so sure the soon-to-be-groom was quite as thrilled for the session as we were, but he stuck it out like a champ and only complained a little bit. :) That just goes to show how much he loves this beautiful lady.

They flirted. They laughed (mostly at me). They kissed. And they allowed me to capture some great moments to add to their story. I am so happy the two of you found each other and I am looking forward to your wedding day. Enjoy!

All smiles and funny faces

I first met  this lovely lady way back in the day when I attended WWU (that was meant to age me, not you Julie) :)  Western is also where she met her handsome match, and they now live in Seattle with their beautiful one year old boy.  I was super excited for the chance to reconnect, and just a little (like a millimeter) more excited to meet their little boy.  I mean, come on, look at that face.  We planned our outing for the evening because 1) Seattle’s best summer light is in the evening  2) that is usually when this little guy is at his happiest.

It is so important to take your kids moods into consideration when planning a photo shoot.  It is best to work the shoot into their schedule and not into yours.  Be aware of nap times, snack times, and traditionally cranky times because they are only going to grow exponentially worse when a stranger with a huge camera is hanging around and interrupting their routine.  Also, bring a snack, bottle, pacifier, blankie…..whatever you would use to soothe your little one at home, bring it along.  It always comes in handy.

So, mom was right, evenings are best for this little guy.  He was literally all smiles and goofy faces.  By the end, we could see he was getting tuckered out, but that was perfect.  A few sips of milk, a car ride home, and it was bedtime for him and wine relaxation time for mom and dad.  It was wonderful to see you both again and an absolute pleasure to meet your little one.  I am looking forward to watching him grow.  Enjoy!

July 16, 2010 - 12:03 am velvetowlphotography - Very cute session! I love the one of dad holding baby in the air, great shot! :)

Urban escapade

I hit the streets of Pioneer Square for an engagement shoot with this smile-inducing couple. They had originally contacted me to photograph their wedding. Unfortunately, I was already booked. Fortunately, that didn’t stop them from wanting me around for their engagement photos…whoo hoo! So after one postponement and some serious weather watching, we found ourselves out on a gorgeous afternoon ready for our photo adventure.

These two have only been together for a few months, but judging by how smitten they are for each other, when it’s right, it’s right. Their sweet flirtations kept me grinning from ear to ear, and their very laid back attitudes and sincere kindness bonded us immediately. As with most people, it took them a few minutes to warm up to the camera, but a location change later and they were nearly able to forget I was there.  This allowed them to be in the moment with each other, and allowed me to capture some great candid images.

Thank you for a wonderful afternoon. I wish you all the best on your wedding day (that I am regrettably missing). :( Enjoy the photos!

July 16, 2010 - 12:05 am velvetowlphotography - oooo the last one is ahhmazing! Love the flare!

Just Glassy

Ok, so please forgive the terrible pun, but this was a wedding with class written all over it, being held at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.  I just couldn’t resist. The magnificent Ali Harvey and I arrived to set up the couple’s first look.  The dapper groom eagerly awaited while I escorted his STUNNING bride to the location.  (I have to admit she was wearing one of my favorite dresses to date)  They were adorably nervous and anxious…..a little bit about the wedding but mostly about having their photos taken. :)  It didn’t take too long for them to warm up to the camera though, and with a little help from their bridal party, we had them posing like rock stars.

The day progressed into the exchanging of vows overlooking the water, a cocktail hour surrounded by a fountain filled with glass, and then settled into the reception being held in the main lobby of the museum.  It was filled with flowers and centerpieces created by a friend of the bride (what a great friend!), the ever-popular candy bar, bright colors of the cupcake tiers from Trophy Cupcake, and last but not least, the amazing mash-ups of retro and modern day music from the vinyl-spinning Austin Beaver (www.austinbeaver.com).

Ali and I both agree that if you are in the market for a DJ, you should look no further than Austin Beaver. His ability to feel the heart beat of the reception, to know just when to amp the party up or slow it down for all of the important moments, is uncanny.  Austin is also a professional in the true sense of the word. This wedding reception lacked a coordinator and without question, Austin stepped up and made sure that all of the scheduled events took place when they needed to—above and beyond.  We look forward to working with him again in the future.

What a day! Ali and I are so grateful to have been a part of it.  Enjoy this peek at your photos!

Seeing Double

A beautiful Saturday, a very busy location, and 2 little boys who refuse to stop moving and want nothing to do with this photographer.  To say that this photo shoot was a bit challenging, would be one humungous understatement.  However, by being quick on our feet (none of this could have happened without some serious child fetching by the parents) and just allowing the boys to be boys, I was still able to capture some adorable moments of these two.  I know that most parents have this idea of the perfect family photo, which of course I try to capture for them, but I always fall in love with the less perfect photos. The real moments are what make me smile, and with two smart and strong-willed boys, real moments are what I got. I am really looking forward to watching these two grow up.  They are double the photo shoot exercise, double the trouble, but also double the cuteness factor (which always wins in my book) :) Enjoy the session!

Sweet Disposition

Ok, so I may have been listening to the Temper Trap a little too much while editing these photos, but at the same time all I could think of was how sweet this couple was/is, hence “Sweet Disposition” has now become their theme song (or at least in my head). On this day, Ali Harvey and I found ourselves reunited with a fellow AIS alum to photograph her wedding in lower Queen Anne. It is always a little nerve wracking photographing another photographer, but I felt a little more at ease knowing her specialty is food and product photography. She will probably have some serious critiques of our detail shots, but hopefully she will go a little easy on us. :)

Since we had an urban location, I chose to keep that same feel to the style of the photos. The ceremony was sweet and intimate, the couple was filled with excitement (for the wedding, yes, but also for the luxurious suite awaiting their arrival), and the day was gorgeous. What more could we ask for? It was such a treat to be a part of your day. I hope you both enjoy this peek at your photos!

July 15, 2010 - 5:27 am Lori Thom - Wow! Those pictures are absolutely perfect! Very talented photographer! And very photogenic couple and family and friends! You captured their special day perfectly!

The Whole Gang

I packed the car and headed to Idaho for this family shoot of three generations.  The weather was not really on our side, but everyone was gathered at the family lake property so rain or no rain, we were going to make it work!  Luckily, everyone was on board and ready for some fun (or at least as fun as photos can be). Clearly this is a family that actually enjoys spending time together, so lucky me, I was able to step back and just let them crack each other up.  There might have been a little help here and there from some coffee doused with irish cream, but for the most part, the joy you see in the photos is the true joy being had.  It was such a treat to capture these moments and I look forward to enjoying their company and their beautiful property again when the warmth of the sun returns (hopefully) to Washington.

Head in the clouds

This wedding found me heading back to Spokane, but this time with the wonderful Ali Harvey to keep me company.  We arrived to a dark, cold and wet city (wait a minute, didn’t we just leave Seattle?) with a slightly ominous feeling about the day to come.  Why do I constantly fret? Of course, we awoke to a slightly cloudy but warm day, that ended up being 70+ degrees with clear skies. Thank you weather gods!  The weather, and maybe a little help from some liquid courage, led to high spirits and a buzz of energy throughout the entire bridal party….not nervous energy whatsoever, but just excitement.  This young, adorable couple was ready to get married, and all of their family and friends were ready to celebrate with them; and celebrate they did!  From the setting (Beacon Hill), to the couple, to all of the guests, there was never a dull moment to be found.  Ali and I were in photographers’ heaven and worked until we literally dropped! (I considered sleeping in the car because the walk to my bed just seemed like too much of a hassle) :)  What an absolutely wonderful day! I can’t thank you enough to choosing to work with me.  Enjoy your peek at your photos!
