It’s holiday time and you realize that you need a photo for your holiday cards. You hire a photographer in the late fall of Seattle and cross your fingers it doesn’t rain. You get lucky and arrive to the location, where it is a bit chilly but not raining (whoo hoo!). You are ready. You’re husband’s ready, and now it’s time to take the little one from the stroller. Let the photo session begin…..that is, until the little one wants nothing to do with you, sitting still, or that lady pointing a crazy contraption with a bright light at her. So what to do? Well, there are a few answers: a) you hold her still until she throws a tantrum because she wants down. b) you bribe her with snacks and favorites toys (I believe that bribing should be allowed on plane rides and photo shoots). c) you do nothing and looked annoyed at the photographer. or d) a little combination of all the above–with the exception of the annoyed part. I truly believe you just have to let your little one be a little one. If she wants to run around (or crawl) for a bit, great I’ll capture it! If she wants to sit in the rocks and try to eat them, ok I’m with you as well. It can also be a good idea to just hang out and play. Usually after a bit of bribery, snacks, solo and play time, the little one with actually want to hang out with mom and dad…usually. Clearly this is not a perfect science, but if you are prepared for a more casual, candid adventure, the shots will happen naturally and truly be your own. This is exactly how things went on this shoot, and while the little one really didn’t want to cooperate, we were still able to get some adorable family moments. Enjoy!
